Film Openings

I would like to take the time to briefly analyse a few opening scenes to some films of my choice...

The First Film is... Saving Private Ryan 1998: Not one of my top Tom Hanks Films but a very good War Film
The Opening scene is extremely memorable. Infact most people who have seen the film will refer to that when talking about it. Its fast, brutal and utterly compelling. It creates a strong feeling of fear and realism in just a few minutes of watching. The Scene is Incredibly well set with everything falling into place perfectly. You really get a sense of how frightening it would have been for the Infantry men storming the beach.
I particularly like the scenes shot under water, they really give you the take on the scrambled and desperate thoughts flowing through the soldiers minds. The scene is very very bloody. There is a shot when a soldier has lost the majority of his arm and is desperately searching for the missing piece. This really shows how truly devastating the effects on the Soldiers mind are. There are many storys told about the Allied invasion of Normandy and about Omaha beach in particular but a lot of people will say you can't experience it unless you have been there in person and fought. I'm not saying this film allows you the same level of insight as actually being there on D-Day but It offers probably the best and closest I've ever seen.

2) Cape Fear ..Classic 1991
There are many things I like about the opening scene and credits in this classic De Niro film.
The Main Vibe is a strange, eerie and mysterious feeling. It frightens but draws you in at the same time.
There is a particularly good use of sound in the opening credits. Loud music really grabs you're attention and keeps you alert. This use of sound and Imagery combined really create an Impact. There are subtle hints through out the credits that give you an insight into the film. The first shot after the credits end is of a teenage girl (Juliette Lewis) who first introduces dialect into the movie. She has a strange tone, an almost unusual one of which a normal girl of similar age would speak. You find out more about this 'strange' and somewhat more mature behaviour of her later on.

3) Young Guns ..The Classic 80s Western 1988
I love this film.
Despite the utter cheesiness of the cast and film itself I find myself Intrigued. The opening scene is well..cheesy but it has a good impact. With the mix of the great soundtrack and the fast paced action it becomes somewhat fun and exciting to watch. After the pointless wasting of ammunition that accompany the credits the opening scene jumps straight into the action with some fast paced horse and gun action. You know a film is going to be good when 80s rock music floods into a western films opening scene.

4) Shaun of the Dead 2004
Another Great Film. Lots of great gags and dark humour.
The opening scene has a great soundtrack that really works well with the credits.
It has a real British feel to the film which straight away grabbed my attention. The first scene is just full of laughs which really with ease gets you hooked. The characters and the dialect really fit well and you become quite acquainted with each of them really early on. A great fun film to watch.

5) The Warriors 1979
A classic late 70s film.
The Opening scene and credits are different and quite subtle. They don't give much information away which makes you want to carry on watching. The Credits are accompanied by a great Action soundtrack. This helps keep the scene paced and moving. I like how the Camera continues to cut in and out keeping everything quick and exciting. You are also introduced to each of the main characters early on. Although the introductions are quite vague and short you still get the feel of each Individual and what kind of character they are.
